Arvel O. Burden, 81, Bloomington, formerly of Shirley, passed away at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 22, 2009) at Heartland Healthcare Center, Normal.

He was born Aug. 20, 1928 in Kentucky to Everett and Mary Daugherty Burden. He married Jean Kay Beck on Aug. 21, 1971 in Bloomington. She passed away May 12, 2003.

Surviving are five children, Susia (Ray) Malcome, Shirley; Rosia (Tony) Hair, Hudson; Lesley Funk, Burt Funk and Wendy Keller, all of Bloomington; two brothers, Bill Burden, Barto, Fl. and Dewey (Charlcie) Burden, Evansville, Indiana; five sisters, Pat (Roger) Atkinson and Joann Rose, both of Rockport, Indiana; Thelma Abshier, Owensboro, Ky.; Clydean (Danny) Gish, Henderson, Ky. and Norma Jean (Tom) Cain, Port Isabelle, Texas; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark and one great-granddaughter.

He served the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
