SWANSBORO NC - Barbara H. Brainard, 88, of Swansboro passed from this life to be with loved ones and her Heavenly Father on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009.

She died peacefully surrounded by family after several weeks of declining health.

Born in Gary, Ind., Oct. 29, 1921, to the late Ladislav and Barbara Shimko Hulus, Barbara graduated from high school and attended two years of business school and subsequently went to work in Gary as an accountant's secretary earning the robust salary of 12 dollars per week. After two years of this endeavor and realizing a pay raise of just four dollars per month, Barbara decided to leave Depression ravaged Gary, hopped a train with two girl friends, traveled to Camp Lejeune, N.C. and promptly joined the United States Marine Corps Women Marine Division.

North Carolina was Barbara's new home and she was proud to serve her country during World War 11. Discharged from the USMC in 1947, she immediately found employment with Navy Relief at Camp Lejeune. After a short tenure there she went to work in civil service as secretary to the Commanding Officer of the United States Naval Medical Research Laboratory.

During her stint in the Marine Corps, Barbara met and married the love of her life, Russell D. Brainard, a transplant from Middletown, Conn., also a young Marine. Together they made North Carolina their permanent new home. Barbara went on to spend 39 years as a civil servant, ending her career as secretary to the Superintendent of Camp Lejeune Schools.

Barbara survivors include her daughter, Ruth Brainard Matthews and her husband, Barry of Swansboro; her grandson, Todd and his wife, Ellen of Swansboro; and Barbara's great-grand-daughter, Emily Paige Matthews; her sister, Betty Heath of Clearwater, Fla.; a nephew, Michael Heath of Orlando; another nephew, Chuckie; and four nieces, Louise, Charlene, Donna and Jeannie.

In addition to Barbara's parents; she was preceded in death by her husband, Russ; her sister, Louise Bologa and her husband, Chuck; and her special brother-in-law, William R. Heath.

Barbara loved her work, her church, Swansboro United Methodist where she volunteered in various ways for many years, her country, her many friends, but most of all, her family. While always friendly and outgoing, Barbara led a simple and strongly disciplined life, always mindful of those in need and less fortunate than she. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Swansboro United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro.

Since Christmas was Barbara's favorite time of the year, please consider those less fortunate folks during this special holiday season or perhaps a donation to the Swansboro United Methodist Church Building Fund.

The family sincerely thanks all of you for your past and present support and love.
