Double funeral services w ere held Monday morning in Traer for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph F. Herink, well known and highly regarded north Tama farm couple, who died only one day apart. Mr. Herink, 75, died last Saturday morning at the Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, and Mrs. Herink was taken Sunday morning in Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo, where she had been a patient two weeks. Mr. Herink had suffered a fall at his farm home south of Traer on Tuesday, April 24. He was taken to the Waterloo hospital where he was treated and had been released the following Friday morning and taken to the Traer care center, where he was a patient only one day — until his sudden death.
The double funeral rites Monday morning were conducted by the Rev. Robert LeMont, pastor of St. Luke Lutheran church. Casket bearers were Dale, Keith and James Hanus, Ernest Herink, James Herink, Jr , and Wayne Rickert. Mrs. A. J. Calderwood was the vocal soloist, and Mrs. Leroy Whannel was at the organ. In charge of the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kucera and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Podhajsky. Interment was in Buckingham cemetery.
Mr. Herink was born in Carroll township, Tam a county, September 12, 1897, the son of Vince and Mary Nachazel Herink. Mrs. Herink, the form er Ella E. Hanus, was born in Highland township, Tama county, September 27, 1895, a daughter of Joseph and Fannie Hanus. The couple were married in Toledo on April 6, 1926. They farmed south of Traer and northwest of Clutier in Carroll township all of their married years. In recent years they have lived on the same farm with a son, Milo. For many years, Mr. Herink was a director of the Carroll township No. 3 school district.
Survivors Mr. and Mrs. Herink leave two sons, Melvin of Traer, and Milo of rural Clutier, and two grandchildren. Mr. Herink is also survived by four brothers: Emil of Traer. William and Edward, both of Clutier, and James of Toledo; and by one sister, Mrs. Frances Novotny, well known former Traer resident, now of New Hartford, Iowa. Surviving Mrs. Herink are seven brothers Emil, Charles, Edward, Vince, James, John and Joe Hanus. Mrs. Herink's parents and three brothers preceded her in death.
