Chief Tucker Dead -
On Thursday evening last while in the store of Mr. J. H. Skittletharpe, Mr.Joseph Tucker was taken suddenly ill and fell. Dr. W; W. Early was called and rendered what services possible, but he expired within a very few minutes.
Mr. Tucker was about about 64 years old, a native of Nash county, but for the past 30 years had resided in this town, being Chief of Police almost continuously for the past 25 years. He was three times married and leaves a widow and five daughters two of then married to, mourn his sudden death.
Mr. Tucker was one of our oldest and best known citizens, and holding the position he did for so long, he was about the best authority we had on matters pertaining to the history and identity of this town. He was a good husband, a good father, a good- officer
, a good citizen, a good friend. He served faithfully and well in the Confederate army, and this, if nothing more, should cause us all to revere his memory and deplore his death.
Peace to his ashes.
