Sarah was a short woman and served the community as a midwife. She assisted the Doctor in delivering babies and tending to the sick. She published a medical book in the nineteenth century.

Mrs. Sarah Arbelle Holmes was born June 3, 1852, and died April 9, 1936, age 83 years, ten months and six days.
She was united in marriage to Z. T. Holmes January 3, 1871, he having preceded her July 23, 1935.
To this union were born ten children, six boys and four girls, of which nine survive, one daugh- ter, Agatha, having preceded them in death on Sept. 28, 1931.
The following survive: John R. Holmes, Acker A. Holmes, Walker Holmes, L. B. Holmes, Mrs. H. D. Lyle and Mrs. Lester Gregory of Eva; Mrs. Johnnie Drake, Vinemont; Ira Holmes and A. B. Holmes of Cullman.
Mrs. Holmes, or Aunt Belle, as, she was best known, was united with the Missionary Baptist church at old Enon, at the age of nineteen and had been a most faithful worker until death.
Aunt Belle will be greatly missed by a host of relatives and friends, who remain to mourn the loss of this beloved mother, friend and neighbor.
Pallbearers: Gomer, Robert, Bernard and Louie Holmes, Boyd Drake and Comer Drinkard, the grand sons of the deceased.
