ST. ALBANS — Herbert Alexander Peterson, 81, passed away Aug. 12, 2001, after a long illness. He was born June 24, 1920, in St. Albans, the son of Algot W. and Anna (Olson) Peterson.

As a youth, Herb was an outstanding athlete and football remained his sport through college and a passion throughout his life. His college career was interrupted by World War II. He joined the Air Force and served as a gunner in the 468th bomb group, serving in the Pacific theater. During his service he was shot down twice and forced to bail out over the Indian Ocean. Upon returning home, he remained fiercely proud of his country and the principles on which it was founded. He retired from the Central Vermont Public Service and enjoyed many years of golf and his home on French Hill. Herb spent many hours working to preserve the history and honor of local military veterans who so courageously served their country and communities. Herb was a member of the Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion, the Champlain Country Club and the St. Albans Historical Society.

Survivors include his step-son, William Peterson; a grandson, William Peterson; granddaughters, Suzan and Ashley Peterson; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend of many years, Betty Eldridge of Swanton.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys on Oct. 29, 1977; sisters, Eleanor Foster on Dec. 10, 1984, and Florence Rath on Sept. 1, 1988; and brother, Allen Peterson on April 15, 1985.

Interment will follow in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery.
