E. Sargent Hoopes Jr., age 88, of 8152 Mudbrook St. NW, Massillon, OH and Ponte Vedra, FL, died Monday afternoon. Mr. Hoopes was former Vice President of Steel & Tube Operations and Director of the Timken Roller Bearing Company, retiring in 1971 following his 39 year career with the company. He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Military College, receiving his master of business administration degree from Harvard University in 1929 and was a 1964 recipient of an honorary doctor of laws degree from Pennsylvania Military College. Born in Beaver, PA to the late Eugene Sargent and Caroline Cunningham Hoopes, he had been a resident of the Canton area since joining the Timken Company in 1932. He was an active member of Calvary Presbyterian Church for 60 years where he was an Elder, Trustee and served on the board of several civic and professional organizations. He was a past President of the Aultman Hospital Association, trustee of Aultman Hospital Blue Cross, Widener College, Canton Country Day School, Northern Florida Christian Center and served on the Board of Naples Community Hospital, the Canton Chamber of Commerce, the United Way and the Boy Scouts of America. Other memberships include Brookside Country Club, Canton Club, the Hole-in-the-Wall, Naples, FL, Ponte Vedra Country Club, FL, Naples, Naples Yacht Club and Rolling Rock Club, Ligonier, PA. In 1975 he was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Nan Page Hoopes. Their children are Nancy Hoopes Morris of Green Cove Springs, FL, E. Sargent Hoopes III of Pulaski, VA, Davidson Hoopes of Lu, NV, and a son Dewitt P. Hoopes, who is deceased. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Marjorie Koster DeBaun Hoopes and a grandson, Sheldon A. Morris III. Other survivors include a son-in-law, Sheldon Morris; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.
