Many funny stories about Elza. He was a ventriloquist from early childhood. Once got into trouble at church for making his voice sound as if it were coming from the belfry and yelling "Help". Elza & Mattie buried at the South Union Baptist Church Cemetery on Route 187 (about 16 miles south of Leitchfield). Elza & Mattie had two children that died at birth and were not named. While his son, Jim said his dad's name was spelled Elza, the Social Security Index spells it Elzie, but that was the way it was pronounced.

Elza went to Alabama with his brother William Robert but then returned. Family members have told me that he visited several times. He does not appear on the 1910 census of Kentucky but he was in Caneyville, Grayson County during 1920. He also appears on the 1930 census at age 51. Still at home during the 1930 census were: Erb; Cora; Gordon, and Coleman.

Registered for the World War I draft at Edmonson County on September 12, 1918 and stated his name as Elzie Mattingly and said he was born December 12, 1878 and was residing and farming in Nash, Kentucky and married to Mattie Mattingly. He described himself as being tall and slender built with black eyes and hair.
