Rev. John W. Carr Dies In Pulpit Sunday Night

The Rev. John Wesley Carr, 64, 1134 E. Elm St., died unexpectedly at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the pulpit of the Second Baptist Church. He had just completed the sermon. Death was caused by a heart attack.

A pastor at the church for 14 years, he had been an untiring worker, a leader both in the spiritual life of the community since he became pastor here and an able director of the material affairs of the church.

He had been instrumental in bringing many new members into the church. He is given much of the credit for building the new church property that was put into service in October, 1953.

Mr. Carr's ability had been recognized in the state organization of his church. He was elected corresponding secretary of the Indiana Baptist Association, and served as dean of religious education and as a member of the evangelistic board for the association.

He was on the local board of directors for the TB Association and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Rev. Carr was first pastor of the First Baptist Church in Liberty. Leaving there he went to the Union Valley Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg and then came to Kokomo.

Born Aug. 12, 1896, in Carrollton, Ky., he was the son of Sidney and Emily Carr.

Rev. Carr was married on Dec. 24, 1917, to Miss Emma O'Bannion, who preceded him in death in Aug. 29, 1959. He later married Mrs. Girtha E. Cosby of Richmond, who survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. William (Barbara) Ferguson, two grandchildren, Twila Ferguson and William Ferguson Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. S. W. Weathers officiating. Burial will follow in Crown Point Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Second Baptist Church after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
