My grandfather Charlie Albert Matthews was born October 13, 1904 and passed away at Gaston Memorial Hospital on October 30, 1983. He died of a massive stroke after having a couple of milder strokes in the days before. He loved to go deer hunting and was worried in the hospital he would miss the yearly trip with his family members. Sadly he passed away before the event.
His was the son of Noah Cornelius Mathews and Rosa Alice Bumgarner Matthews of Granite Falls NC. His wife was Laura Rosetta Moore Matthews of Gastonia, NC. He was survived by his two sons Coyt and Bobby and seven grandchildren.
Charlie’s surname was misspelled to Matthews (2 T’s) when he went to work in Gastonia. The family kept the spelling with the 2 T’s. Many other ancestors and extended Mathews family members go by Mathis or Mathus so who really knows the correct surname.
