Maxine Van Sickel, 87, Kokomo, passed away at 3:55p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Community Howard Regional Health in Kokomo. She was born on March 30, 1925, the daughter of Rev. Clifford William Baughman and Sylvia Opal (Elliott) (Baughman) Bacon in Vermont, Illinois. On April 17, 1948 she married L. K. ‘Van' Van Sickel in Kewanee, Illinois and he preceded her in death on October 1, 1996.

She graduated from Kewanee High School in 1943; she then moved to Chicago and attended Northwestern University. In 1946, Maxine moved to Eureka, Illinois and attended Eureka College from 1944-1948 with a major in Psychology. She was a member of Delta Delta Pi Sorority.

Maxine and L.K. moved from LaGrange, Illinois to Kokomo in 1954. She was a Girl Scout in her youth, and very active in church all of her life, her membership was at First Congregational Church, where she had leadership roles in the Nearly New Shop and the Women's Guild, she also participated in youth group activities with her sons. She was active as a volunteer in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League and Babe Ruth Concession Stands.

In 1978, after raising her family, Maxine went to work at Americana Health Care Center in Kokomo where she held positions as Social Services Designee, Volunteer Coordinator, Marketing Director, and Admission Director. She retired in 1988.

Maxine was the Coordinator of the Kokomo Morning Alzheimer's Support Group for 17 years. She initiated and served as the Executive Director of the YWCA sponsored Open Door Program, a daytime care facility offering support to family members providing primary care to Alzheimer's and Memory Impaired Adults. She organized "Continuity of Care", North Central Indiana and the Indiana Federation of Alzheimer's Support Groups, Inc. She held positions on various boards including Continuity Care of Indiana, Indiana Federation of Alzheimer's Support, Area V Council on Aging, and Home Health Agency of Howard Community Hospital.

She is survived by her sons, Kirk E. (Mary) Van Sickel, Kokomo, Scott K. Van Sickel, Morton, IL, and Todd C. (Sharon) Van Sickel, West Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Brent E. (Sarah) Van Sickel, Kokomo, Amy L. (Eddie) Cron, Kokomo, Garrett T. Van Sickel, West Lafayette, and Grace E. Van Sickel, West Lafayette, Step-grandchildren, Tonya Smith, Kokomo, and Michael (Amy) Smith, Kokomo, 4 Great-grandchildren, and 3 Step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Harry Bacon, husband, sister, Leigh Charlene Moe, half-brother, Robert Baughman, and a Great-grandchild.

Memorial Services celebrating Maxine's life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2012, at First Congregational Christian Church, 505 W. Mulberry Kokomo, IN with Pastor Jon Tice officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the Church. Private burial will take place at Albright Cemetery.
