Suggested edit: Dr. Lorenzo Dow Caldwell Jr., 91, veteran physician and one of the most prominent and widely known residents of Mathias, W.Va., died Saturday morning following an illness of three weeks.

Dr. Caldwell enjoyed exceptionally good health for a person of his advanced years until three weeks ago when he became ill. He had recently been a patient in the Rockingham Memorial Hospital for 17 days.

Dr. Caldwell attended school in the Mathias area and graduated from college in Philadelphia. He graduated from the John Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1893 at the age of 25. Following his graduation he resided at Coketon, W.Va., for eight years before returning to his native community of Mathias.

Dr. Caldwell was widely known and respected and continued his practice until five years ago.

Dr. Caldwell gave much of his time and energy to charity.

Friends said he never in his many years of practice sent out a bill for his services.

He was a member of the Mathias Church of the Brethren and took an active part in church affairs.

He was born on October 21, 1868 at Mathias and was a son of the late Rev. L.D. Caldwell and Sarah Souder Caldwell.

He was twice married, his first wife was Miss. Grace Fouch and his second wife was the former Miss. Mattie Jenkins, both of his wives preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Hinegardner and Mrs. Susan Halterman, both of Mathias, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A nephew Carl Caldwell, made his home with Dr. Caldwell and helped care for him.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Tuesday morning from the Mathias Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Bobby Phillips will conduct the services assisted by the Rev. Harvey Halterman.

Burial will be in the Caldwell Cemetery.
