Violet Opal Capistran, 73, of Crookston, MN, died early Thursday morning, September 6, 2007, in the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, with her family by her side.
Vi was born at Eldred, MN on April 26, 1934, the daughter of Bernt E. "Bert" and Hazel O. (Berg) Winger. On July 29, 1950 she was united in marriage to Duane Joseph Capistran at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Crookston. Vi worked for several Crookston businesses over the years, including Jiffy Fry, Dahlgren's, Thomas Drug, and the deli department of Hugo's. Duane passed away on December 29, 1999. After his death Vi became involved with the Tri-Valley Foster Grandparent program at Washington Elementary School, continuing until this past Spring. The time she spent working with, and guiding, the young children was very rewarding to her. "Grandma Vi" gave, and received, lots of love from the kids and all of the Washington School staff. In her lifetime she touched many lives, and will be forever remembered with great affection by her family, friends, and many, many "grandchildren".
Family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Penny Capistran of Grand Forks, ND; four grandchildren, Sarah, Becky, Darick, and Benjamin Capistran; a great-grandson, Anthony Capistran; two brothers, Wallace Winger of Coos Bay, OR, and Glenn Winger of Las Vegas, NV; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Beverly Burrington of Colfax, WI, Dolores and Jerry Baril of Murreta, CA, and Joyce Kinney of Lakeview, OR; four sisters-in-law, Joyce Sullivan of Crookston, MN, Noreen Erickson and her husband, Gary, of Montevideo, MN, Kay Winger of Turtle Bay, WI, and June Winger of North Bend, OR; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
