Ethel was born in Winston County, Alabama. She was the 6th child born to Albert Marx Payne and Sallie Viana Denson Payne. She moved with her family to Preston Idaho about 1925. Eventually the family moved to Riverdale, Utah and then to Ogden, Utah.
She met and married Audie Massengale 16 March 1937 in Ogden, Utah. They had 4 children, however the oldest child Sally Ann died in 1937 and their only son Audi Jr. passed away in 1989. Ethel worked in the Blackington Canning Factory peeling tomatoes and cherries. She also worked for the Defense Depot in Ogden and Woolworths at the food counter. Ethel loved to crochet. She made bedspreads, table clothes sets and covers for couches as well as doillies. She eve taught a couple of her nieces to crochet. She passed away unexpectedly.
