Claude Douglas Dickerson Jr., 66, passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2401 College Ave., Fort Worth. Family and friends will be received in the reception hall at St. John's following the memorial service. The ashes will be interred at a later date at the Hood Family Cemetery in Aledo.
Pallbearers will be Carl Blackledge, Ban Bywaters, Dave Bywaters, Bob Doby, John Hughes, Charles Kendall, Andy Thompson, Tom Turner, Weir Wilson. Honorary bearers will be the board of directors and staff of Higginbotham and Associates, Inc., as well as John Church, Tony Harris, Steve Smith, Luke Ellis, David Murph, Bob Murchison and Carter Llewellyn.
Doug was born Feb. 22, 1943, to Claude and Thelma Dickerson in Fort Worth. Doug grew up in Fort Worth, attending Bluebonnet Elementary School, McLean Junior High School and Paschal High School. He then attended Texas Christian University and graduated in 1965 with a B.S. in economics and government. In 1984, Doug graduated from the TCU Ranch Management Program.
In 1965, after graduating from TCU, Doug went to work for a family-owned independent insurance firm named M.O. Andrews Co. In 1974, Doug merged M.O. Andrews Co. with two other independent insurance firms and formed Dickerson, Llewellyn & Fitzgerald, Inc., becoming president of the firm. In 1996, Doug merged Dickerson, Llewellyn & Fitzgerald, Inc., into Higginbotham & Associates, Inc., becoming executive vice president and a member of its board of directors.
After many years of hard work and exams, Doug obtained his Certified Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation, the highest professional designation in the property and casualty insurance industry. Doug served many thousands of customers in Texas throughout his insurance career.
Doug had been an active volunteer and community servant since 1968 when he became a member of the board of managers of the Downtown YMCA. In 1978, he became president of the downtown board of managers. He then became a member of the board of directors of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth and served as president of that board from 1993-94. Doug continued to serve on that board until 1996. Doug also served in many fundraising capacities during his many years on these boards and served as chairman of the finance committee for the Metropolitan YMCA for a number of years.
In addition to the YMCA, Doug served as a member of the board of trustees of the Lena Pope Home, Inc., and also served as its president. He further served on the vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church, including as senior warden of the vestry, and on the St. John's Foundation Board. Doug served as a director of Central Bank & Trust until its sale to Norwest Corporation and as an advisory director on the board of Wells Fargo Bank, Texas. At his death, Doug was serving on the boards of directors of the Southwestern Diabetic Foundation, the St. John's Episcopal Church Foundation, the Lena Pope Home Foundation, and The Mental Health Housing Development Corporation.
Finally, he was a member of SAE, the Fort Worth Club, Rivercrest Country Club, and Steeplechase.
Doug was most passionate about his family. He was also proud of his career and the many friends and associates he made and met during his 36 years in the insurance and risk-management business. He was also proud of his associations with the various community service organizations he was involved with. He believed volunteerism is important to society and that his faith, family, business and community service led to a wonderful life.
Survivors: His wife of 37 years, Mira; mother, Thelma; son, C.D. and wife, Elyse, and their children, Simon and Amelia; daughter, Hollin; sister, Jane Blackledge and husband, Carl, and their children, Kelsey and Carl; niece, Kay Hansen and husband, Chris, and their children, Kate and Clayton; and his cousins.
