Stories about Bob - From Regina A. Green
In general, Bob was a very dear brother. Although he could have a temper, at rare times, for the most part, he was genial and very good natured. He did have a streak of stubbornness, as I remember.
Remembrances of him are as follows:
1. Bob and the bean pot.
Bob was perhaps 2 years old or younger. Our family (it was a small family then) had joined with relatives on a big picnic to celebrate the 4th July. For the pot-luck dinner, someone had brought a big pot of baked beans. In the midst of all the camaraderie, and the joyous gabbling in the midst of the serving of the food, Bob had been forgotten. He was eventually found sitting on the ground with the bean pot. Studiously eating his fill - and then some - of the good baked beans - Someone snapped his picture before he was reluctantly parted with the bean pot. He was probably a sick boy the next day.
2. Bob was especially fond of his upcoming birthday's - in anticipation, of course, of receiving gifts. (At least when he was young.) One bright summer day, in early June, he was out swinging on our large gate, he was soon to be six years old on June 13th. We lived in the country. I had just come running up from the nearby creek, where bushes of blooming wild pink roses grew. Bob had a pensive look on his face. "What are you going to give me for my birthday?" he asked. I thought and thought - as I had not a single penny to my name. Suddenly, I joyously cried: "I'm going to give you a BIG bouquet of wild roses! Poor Bob - he looked so down-cast at that news!
3. Another birthday event -
Again, Bob was quite young, perhaps seven or eight. We then lived in town in Eureka. There were quite a few neighbors whom Bob knew and played with.
His birthday was coming up. Towards late afternoon on June 13th, Mother was quite surprised - and then alarmed. Because several of Bob's friends had arrived at our house - each with a wrapped gift for Bob. They had been invited, they said, to Bob's birthday party. Mother knew nothing about any "birthday party" and was totally unprepared. It's seems that Bob had invited them, delivering each of them a personal, written invitation - composed by himself - without Mother's knowledge.
I do not know how all the confusion ended, except that it probably certain at the end, that Bob got a spanking.
*No way Mom would have spanked Bob on his birthday! S. R. (Sister Rosemary)
Thank you to Bob's daughter, Dana Green Wood for the awesome stories.
