R. J. Abernathy Former Citizen of Bonham No More
Called By Death At Dallas Thursday Afternoon At 4:30 O'clock
R. J. Abernathy, known by many of Bonham's citizens and who resided in this city for many years died at Dallas at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, after an illness extending over some few days.
BIOGRAPHICAL
R. J. Abernathy was born in Giles County, Tennessee, September 27, 1851. He moved with his people to Missouri in early childhood. In that state his mother married the late Elder Charles Carlton at Springfield, Mo. In 1860 the family moved to Texas, and in 1867 came to this city to make their home.
Mr. Abernathy attended Carlton College, of this city, and afterwards he was a student in Bethany College for one year. Then he went to Poughkeepsie Business College, where he graduated. On his return to Texas he was for some time associated with his brother, the late John Buckner Abernathy, in the mercantile business. Later he was with the firm of Charles Davis as bookkeeper. Still later he formed a partnership with F. M. Thompson, Albert Gale and Frank Heunche, starting a hardware business known as Thompson, Abernathy & Co. Every member of the firm mentioned is now dead. The business lasted for a number of years.
Mr. Abernathy married Miss Alice Hunt, daughter of the late C. B. Hunt and wife in 1878. She died some years since. Seven children were born to them. Aubyn, the eldest, died in childhood. Mrs. Edgar Whedbee, Robert E. and Miss Sallie Abernathy, all of Dallas, and Mrs. Harry Sears, of the same city, and Mrs. George Terrell of San Antonio, are the living children.
Jones Abernathy had been a Christian for years, since childhood, in fact. He was ever faithful to his religious convictions. He was ever ready to respond to the needy and sorrowing in their troubles. He was for many years an elder of the First Christian Church of Bonham. He held a similiar position in a Dallas church of the same faith, the Central Christian Church, having moved to Dallas along about 1912, where he again engaged in the hardware business on Ross Avenue.
Everybody, but most especially his berthern in the church, regarded this man for his excellent worth, and appreciated him for his fine Christian character, and the writer of this article, who knew him for years, never saw Jones Abernathy really angry about anything, always meeting the problems of life, be they intricate, commonplace, easy or unusual with a calmness that was remarkable. That was why he could stand on a street corner in Bonham when he visited this city, and shake hands with and greet everybody with a smile - he was their friend. He lived his religion, not as a bigot, not as a fanatic, but as his Master would have him do - as a Christian gentleman, and if this article were made twice this long, nothing could be said of this man that would be better.
Besides his brother, John Buckner Abernathy, Mr. Abernathy had two sisters, Mrs. Tom McKinney, formerly of this city, and Mrs. Ed Andrews who lived in Sherman.
The funeral for deceased will be held in Dallas at 11 a.m. Saturday. The body will then be brought to Bonham and taken to Willow Wild Cemetery, where interment will take place at 4:30, the body resting by the side of his wife and daughter.

Dallas (TX) Morning News, Jan 5, 1929, p. 1-6
After funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Central Christian Church, with Dr. Graham Frank, pastor, officiating, the body of Robert Jones Abernathy, 77, founder of the Abernathy Hardware Company, who died Thursday, will be sent to Bonham for burial.
Mr. Abernathy died at the home of his son, Richard Abernathy, 4206 Ross Avenue. It was in 1912 that Mr. Abernathy came to Dallas from Bonham to found the Abernathy Hardware Company. For the last fifteen years he had been an elder of the Central Christian Church.
Active pallbearers will be Rex Townsend, B. A. McKinney, Clarence Kenyon, O. N. Floyd, Randolph Payne and J. S. Richardson. The board of deacons and elders of the Central Christian Church will be pallbearers.
