Funeral services were to be held at the Baptist church at 4 this afternoon for Mrs. Bruce Mayes, 69, who died at her home Tuesday night after a long illness. Interment was to be in Odd Fellows Rest with Dr. Melvin C. Eidson of Luling officiating, assisted by Rev. J. K. Ridgeway. Columbus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Mayes was born Zula Sanders near Old Lyonsville, Lavaca county, on January 1, 1876, a daughter of George and Cassie Sanders. At the age of four she moved with her family to Live Oak in the fall of 1880. She united with the Baptist church at the age of 14. On August 14, 1892, she was married to Ethelbert Bruce Mayes at Live Oak, moving to Oakland in November. 1894, and later to Columbus in 1908. Mr. and Mrs. Mayes celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1942. Mrs. Mayes is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. D. H. Wilson, San Antonio and Mrs. I. C. Austin, Camp Hood; one son Bruce Mayes, Oakland and three grandchildren, Mrs. R. G. Cole, San Antonio; Kathryn Ann Koliba and Homer Bruce Koliba, Columbus, One great-grandson, Robert Bruce Cole of San Antonio and two brothers, Oscar Sanders of Oakland and Frank Sanders of Eagle Lake, also survive. One daughter, Katy Mayes Koliba, died in June, 1940. Named as pallbearers were O. P. Moore, Sam K. Seymour Jr., O. C. Strunk, Henry Runge, Jack Leyendecker, Weldon Leyendecker and Clarence Potter.
Honorary pallbearers are Herman Braden, O. A. Zumwalt, Earl Sandmeyer, S. K. Seymour, J. J. Potter,J. D. Seymour, Sam Hamburger, W. M. Wallace, Adam Burttschell, John Wegenhoft, Dr. C. I. Shult , Dr. S. H. Kirkham, J. J. Mansfield, Dr. W. W. Gunn, D. E. Foster, Felix and Arthur Fehrenkamp, Alex McCormick, Charles Herder Sr., Lavo Hester, G. S. Stansbury, Louis Waldvogel, J. V.
