"PERTH'S OLDEST RESIDENT DEAD.
Mrs. John Hart, sr., Dies on Sunday in Her Ninety-Ninth Year
.
On Sunday last, the 5th inst., there took place in Perth at the residence of her son Mr. John S. Hart, the death of Mrs. John Hart in the ninety-ninth year of her age. At the time of her death Mrs. Hart was the oldest inhabitant of this town, and probably of this part of the country. She was born in London, England, on the 16th of November, 1808. Her early childhood was passed in London and Carlisle. She was brought up chiefly in Paisley, Scotland, and spent the early part of her married life in that town and in Glasgow. She came to Canada with her husband and young family in 1842. Those were the days of the sailing vessel with its long and tedious passage. The voyage from Glasgow to Montreal lasted over six weeks. It took two weeks to come from Montreal to Perth - by boat up the Ottawa to Bytown, thence to Oliver's Ferry by the Rideau Canal, and by wagon on to Perth.
During this long period of sixty-five years Perth has been her home. Born in the reign of George III., she has lived under five British sovereigns, George III., George IV., William IV., Queen Victoria and King Edward. Her husband whose memory is held in great respect throughout the whole district, and who was a worthy elder in St. Andrew's church, and an earnest teacher in the Sunday school, died in 1881. Mrs. Hart is survived by four sons, John S. Hart, Perth; the Rev. Prof. Hart D. D., Winnipeg; William Hart, Philadelphia, and S. R. Hart, Toronto, and by three daughters, Mrs. George E. Neilson, Arnprior; Mrs. R. A. Semple, of Mount Holly, New Jersey, and Mrs. Maitland Newman, Hamilton. Besides these she leaves twenty seven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hart was blessed with a good constitution, had a remarkable memory, and retained the full possession of her faculties till the very end. Her death was peaceful and happy. She appeared to be in her usual health, and only a few minutes before the end, was conversing with members of her family. Painlessly and peacefully, she passed away in sleep into the eternal presence. Her life was one of singular sweetness and beauty, and her death leaves a great blank in a large circle of relatives and friends. She was a member of St. Andrew's congregation, and took a warm interest in the missionary work of the church, especially in India and among the North West Indians. She belonged to the good old covenanting stock of Scotland, the Peden family being among her ancestors. She was buried Wednesday afternoon in Elmwood cemetery, the Rev. Dr. Campbell, the Rev. D. Currie, and her minister the Rev. A. H. Scott conducting the funeral service."
