Rev Philo Haynes was highly respected and noted for his 50 years of work in the Methodist Church.

Philo came with his family to Montana from West Branch, Iowa in 1881. They homesteaded in Millstown (Miles City). He was one of the earliest students of Wesleyan University in Helena, Montana where he graduated in 1895.

Philo was a Sunday School Missionary which involved traveling thousands of miles to reach the homesteaders throughout Montana, including the towns of Columbia Falls, Helena, Stevensville, Glasgow, Fort Benton, Belt, Portage, Floweree, Carter, Loma, Cascade, Huntley, Sheridan, Forsyth, Culbertson and Great Falls.

Philo met his wife Hattie Dickinson while in Helena. They married in Missoula on May 28, 1896. In 1924 Philo was chosen to represent the Methodist churches in the state of Montana at the general conference in Massachusetts. In 1943 he became pastor of the Great Falls Westside Methodist Church. In 1945 while consulting with the church board, Philo suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.
