T. A. Williams claimed by death beloved citizen known as "Cheap John" passes away suddenly at home. Known as "Cheap John" for years because he ran a store called by that name died suddenly at his residence 163 Dewey Avenue between 6 and 7 o'clock. Death according to Dr. Sam Orr Black who examined the body was due to heart trouble. The deceased is survived by his widow, one daughter Mrs. A.O.Thomas, 3 sons, Messars Geddie, William and Edward Williams. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Mr. Williams was seventy-four years of age. He came to Spartanburg about forty years ago. For a long time he ran a business on Morgan Square under the name of "Cheap Johns Store". It is said of him by men who had known him throughout the years that they have never met a finer man. He did not accumulate wealth in material things but there are many in Spartanburg today as a gentleman remarked last evening, who have been better by the example he set in rock bottom honesty in all his dealings. They regard "Cheap John" Williams richer than many who have left more gold and more real estate. Mr and Mrs Williams dined yesterday at the home of Dr and Mrs A.O. Thomas. Mr. Williams seemed to be in his usual good spirits and appeared to have enjoyed the day very much. In the afternoon he left for home somewhat earlier than his wife. Between 6 and 7 o'clock in the evening his body was discovered sitting erect in a chair. Coroner J.S. Turner was summoned and after an investigation and the statement by Dr. Sam Orr Black he was satisfied that death was due to natural causes
