Robert L. Ballentine
Robert Lee Ballentine, age 80, of 311 Chartridge Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away on Sunday, June 6, at Coffman Nursing Home.
Born in Hagerstown on March 15, 1924, he was the son of the late Harper Ballentine and Margaret Wagaman Ballentine Harris and stepfather, Charles L. Harris.
He graduated from Hagerstown High School, class of 1942, and was a graduate of Virginia Tech, class of 1949. He was employed by The Potomac Edison Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1986.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church and had served on the church council, ushering committee and many other church activities. He was also a member of the Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion; B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378; The Potomac Edison Forerunners; and was a member of model airplane clubs in Greensburg, Pa., Front Royal, Va., and Hagerstown. Building and flying model airplanes and later controlled airplanes has been a hobby he enjoyed since he was 14 years of age.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Brenner Ballentine; three children, Robert Harper Ballentine and spouse, Barbara of Front Royal, Jon Hollingsworth Ballentine and spouse Diane of Hagerstown, Krista Ballentine Bland and spouse Richard of Guffey, Colo.; a sister, Margaret Ballentine Stock and spouse, Edgar of Kensington, Md.; five grandchildren, Jodi Lynn Ballentine, Kelli Ann Ballentine, Ashley Brooke Ballentine of Front Royal, John Hollingsworth Ballentine Jr. of Hagerstown and Matthew Even Bland of Guffey; one great-grandchild, Kyra C. Lane of Front Royal; and two nieces.
Services will be held Wednesday June 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. from St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Edward Heim and the Rev. Carroll Boyer officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. N., Hagerstown, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund at St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
