Son of Sarah Butler and Dr. James Mease. Grandson of Senator Peirce Butler.

Born John Mease, he changed his name to John Butler in 1831 to gain his part of Senator Peirce Butler's inheritance.

Served as 11th Captain in the First City Troop. He raised a company of cavalry for Mexican War service, which was made part of the 3rd United States Dragoons. He died of dysentery during his Mexican War service.
