At the outbreak of the Civil War, Banham enlisted in the famed "Red Legged Devils" 14th Brooklyn, (84th NYV) Co H and was promoted to Corporal. assigned to the Engineer and the Pioneer Corp at different times.
Samuel Banham also ran for NY Assembly from Brooklyn but lost in 1866.
According to the New York Times (April 22, 1884): Banham "While temporarily insane, locked himself in a closet and shot himself three times in the mouth, he lingered for 2 hours before death"
