In Memory of Henry J. Hellums
Whereas, the Creator of the Universe has, in His infinite wisdom seen fit to call from our midst our beloved friend and brother, Henry J. Hellums; and whereas, he was a friend of man, a devout Christian, a lover of Masonry, a true husband and a loving father; therefore be it resolved, that we, his survivors and friends, hereby attempt to express our thankfulness that such a man has lived among us and at the same time acknowledge our sincere regret at his passing from us.
Brother Hellums was born 4 January 1866, three miles south of Burnsville, Miss. For approximately thirty years he had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. He demitted from the Burnsville Lodge No. 233, F & AM, in 1890 to become a charter member of Robert G. Smith Lodge No. 412.
That he was a good citizen is proved by his having served two terms as Mayor of the village of Paden. That he was slow to anger and a lover of peace is attested by the evidence of all who know him; the host of people who visited him in his last illness at his home in Russellville, Ala., where he died on August 16th, as well as the unusually large crowd present at the interment by the Masonic Order at Forked Oak Cemetery on August 18th, all of one accord, signify their honor and respect for such a man.
It was ever the policy of the deceased that "soft words turneth away wrath", and although he is gone from us, we have the assurance that "blessed is the peacemaker for he shall be called the Child of God."
Brother Hellums was married four times. The first was to Miss Mollie Tennison, the second was to Miss Josie Tennison, the third was to Miss Mattie Belle Shackelford and the fourth was to Mrs. Minnie Belle Owens. He suffered the disappointment of losing his first wife after only seven years of marriage. The second likewise died seven years after marriage. The death of the third wife left him with six motherless children. The fourth wife, although she had five fatherless children, has been able since her marriage to Brother Hellums, by the Cooperation of his loving character, to cause harmony and peace to continue to reign in his home. No discrimination was shown in the home among the children. Each parent was a parent to all alike. Each child mourns alike the death of "Uncle Henry".
The bereaved are: Two brothers, John and Raymond Hellums; four sisters, Mrs. George Sanders, Mrs. Mat McAnally, Mrs. Dink Butler and Mrs. Dollie Owens; five sons, Arnie, Earl, Mearl, Millard and Prentiss Hellums; three daughters, Mrs. Gene Isbell, Miss Hattie Rae and Jimmy Hellums; His devoted wife and her children, W. G. and Kay Owens, Mrs. R. A. Nixon, Miss Lila and Miss Lola Owens and a host of other relatives and friends.
