Otto W. Holland, son of Thomas H. and Belle Holland was born June 7, 1925, at Montauk, Missouri, and passed away February 15, 1992 at the VA Hospital in Columbia, MO. Otto graduated from Licking High school in 1941, and voluntarily enlisted in the army on his 18th birthday. He was assigned with the Glider Troops of the 13th Airborne Division and later qualified as a paratrooper, deploying with his unit to Europe in 1943. Following the surrender of Nazi forces, he returned to Missouri and was honorable discharged. On December 10, 1945 he was united in marriage to Virginia M. Pursiful.
Surviving immediate family members include his wife, Virginia, sons Thomas Ross and Gary Ronald, daughters-in-law Sally A. and Linda A. and four grandchildren: Michael W. Holland, Jennifer L. Holland, David R. Holland, and Scott M. Holland, also surviving are his mother Belle Holland, brother, Eldon Holland; and four sisters, Goldie King, Velma Cadle, Beulah Floyd and Cledith Hubbs, all of Licking.
Otto again voluntarily enlisted in the army in 1958, joining the 101st Airborne Division. He served at various ports in the United States, Hawaii and Alaska. Overseas assignments included Germany and Vietnam. After attaining the rank of Sergeant first Class he was medically retired in 1970. Sergeant First Class Holland was the proud recipient of numerous military awards, including; the Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Ribbon, Vietnamese Medal of Honor, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, European Occupation Medal, National Defense Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Sergeant Holland was most proud of his Glider and Paratrooper Qualification Wings. Otto dedicated his life to serving his God, country, and family and to preserving the freedoms that all Americans enjoy.
Services were held February 18, 1992, 2:00p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Chaplain Lt. Col Tommy H. Marlowe officiating. Pallbearers were: 5th Engineer Battalion, Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Intermennt was in the Patterson Cemetery, under direction of Fox Funeral Home.
