The son of Henry & Elizabeth M. (Eichelberger) Zearing, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted and mustered into state service in Shiremanstown, Cumberland County, September 11, 1862, as a private with Co. A, 1st Pennsylvania Militia. The Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file claims he was also discharged the same day, but that may be an error. The regiment discharged September 24, 1862.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg October 15, 1862, mustered into federal service there October 20 as a private with Battery C, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company October 19, 1865. Note that the regiment shown on the tombstone is not only erroneous but impossible. Pennsylvania only put six artillery regiments into service during the Civil War, not thirty-two,

He married Annie E. Warden November 27, 1866, in York and fathered Percival M. (b. 08/23/67) and Mary E. (b. 05/20/68). In 1920, he was living in Shiremanstown.
