Car-Train Accident Kills Green Bay Man

Victim Thrown From Car Beneath Wheels of Incoming C&NW Train

Bernard Fedor, 39, of 1261 Kenwood Ave., Green Bay, was killed this morning when his car crashed into a Chicago and North Western Railroad train on Green Bay's West side.

Fedor was killed when he was thrown beneath the wheels of the incoming passenger train at the N. Military Avenue crossing just north of Velp Avenue. The crash occurred about 8 a.m.

His death was the city's sixth traffic fatality of the year and Brown County's 16th. The state traffic toll now stands at 782, compared with 797 a year ago on this date.

Fedor's body, cut in half by the wheels of the train, was dragged about 100 feet following the collision. His car crashed into a ditch.

Skidded sideways

Green Bay police said the car apparently skidded sideways into the train, bound from Escanaba to Chicago. A crossing sign protects the crossing.

Fedor was driving north on Military Avenue, apparently on his way to the Wisconsin Public Service Pulliam Plant where he was employed.

Police at first were not sure of the identification of the body, since Fedor recently purchased the car and the license plates had not been replaced. A Public Service official identified the body about an hour later.

The train's engineer told officers the car skidded into the first passenger car, immediately behind the engine. The train came to a stop about 250 feet following the collision.
