"DARVEL DEVAUN RICHINS, 77, a longtime Animas resident, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in Portal, Arizona. Public visitation will be on Friday, November 6, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cotton City, New Mexico. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m., with Bishop J. Wayne Fralie conducting. Interment will follow at the Animas-Cotton City Cemetery.

Darvel Devaun Richins was born on March 28, 1932 in Thatcher, Arizona to Orson James and Edna (Richardson) Richins. Devaun, as he was known, grew up in Virden, New Mexico and graduated from Virden High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Lillian Jones, on September 6, 1952.

Devaun and Lillian came to Animas in 1952, where Devaun and his brothers began farming and ranching together. Over the years, Devaun served on the New Mexico Crop Improvement Association and the Cotton Board. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was the past Bishop of the Animas Ward.

Devaun was an industrious and prosperous farmer and a passionate rancher in the Animas and Portal area. He loved the land and his work, but he was even better known as a devoted husband, a loving father, and an instant and loyal friend to everyone he met. He generously shared his experience and his means with others in the farming and ranching community. Unfailingly cheerful and optimistic, Devaun possessed a pleasant and playful personality that delighted his family and acquaintances and never diminished with time.

Devaun was preceded in death by his daughter, Joycelyn Allen, of Albuquerque, NM; a grandson, Dane Palmer; a great granddaughter, Joycelyn Eva DeBuck; two brothers, O.J. Richins and Clyde Richins, and a sister, Faye Richins.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Jones Richins, of Animas, NM; and his surviving children, Lyle Devaun Richins and his wife, LaStar, of St. George, UT; Dorothy Crane and her husband, Melvin, of Bennington, ID; and Janell Palmer and her husband, Steve, of Mesa, AZ. He is also survived by two brothers, Darrow Richins and Dean Richins of Animas, NM; and sisters, Lenore Uptain of Phoenix, AZ; Golda Hill of Victoria, TX; LaVona Knight of Mesa, AZ; Maxene Jones of Tucson, AZ; and Beverly Porter of Orem, UT. Devaun had twenty three (23) grandchildren: Justin, Rachel, Jeffrey, Charles, Steven, Jesse, Megan, Cody, Kandelyn, LeShell, Trevan, Kayleena, Raveny, Shandilee, Shybree, Peter, Camie, Alisha, William, Tanya, Devaun, Morgan and Markie; and 27 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a son in law, Ben M. Allen, and his wife, Monica, of Albuquerque, NM.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Justin, Jeffrey, Charles, and Steven Allen, Cody Sprague, Trevan Richins, and Peter, William and Devaun Crane."
