Altha Adeline Holthusen was born September 23, 1914, in Deer Creek, MN, the daughter of William Ferdinand and Amanda Sedona (Schmidt) Holthusen. She was baptized into the Christian Faith at Deer Creek. She grew up, attended rural Sandridge School east of Grygla and graduated from Lincoln High School, Thief River Falls, in 1932. She received a year of teacher's training in Thief River Falls and taught school for 6 years, first at Elwell School near Thief River Falls, west of Grygla and at Pinewood, MN.
On January 10, 1939, Altha was united in marriage to Barnett Benson at Grand Forks, ND. The couple lived and farmed in Spruce Grove Township, near Fourtown, MN until moving to Grygla in 1982.
Belief in God was an important part of Altha's and Barnett's life. After accepting Christ as their personal Savior, they established the Fourtown Mission Chapel in the late 1940's and led the community outreach for many years. She was a member of Community Bible Church, Grygla, MN.
Survivors include children, Ronald (Sandy) Benson, Brighton, MI, Margaret (Adolph) Rabe, Burnsville, MN, Lois (Dick) White, Colorado Springs, CO and Raymond (Marshelle) Benson, Grygla, MN; grandchildren, Tovi (Jon) Rabe Muma, Lakeville, MN, Kimberly (Scott) Wolfe, Howell, MI, Cathy (Jeff) Growney, Reston, VA, Jamie (Rick) Schmidt, George, IA, Kristi (Matt) Suchoski, Grygla, Eric Benson, Grygla, Daniel White, Fort Collins, CO and David White, Rohnert Park, CA; and eight great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by husband, Barnett, parents, sisters, Bertha Dumbrigue, Helen Smart and Virgil "Virginia" Ahola and brother, Carl Holthusen.
