David was a Civil War veteran of the 83rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company D, he inlisted when he was just 14, but inflated his age to avoid serving as a drummer boy. David was briefly a prisoner of war near Grand Coteau, LA in December 1863. After the war, David mostly lived in Indianapolis where he married, had two sons, lost his first wife, married a second time and had three daughters, his second wife, 'Jennie', died in 1918 and is buried next to him. David was a wallpaper hanger and interior finisher by trade, he was very active in the Grand Army of the Republic and Mason's in Indianapolis. It was David's veterans pension check, and odd jobs hanging paper, that supported his youngest daughter and her three young children through the depression. At the end of his life, David was caretaker at the GAR Gordon Post at 572 N. Illinois where they gave him room and board. David was the next to last surviving Civil War veteran living in Marion County at the time of his death at the VA hospital on West 10th Street.
