BELLE FOURCHE - Helene J. Shuck, 74, Belle Fourche, died September 19, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital, Spearfish.

A Memorial service will be held at 1 1:00 A.M. Monday, September 23, 2002, at the First Congregational Church, Belle Fourche, with Rev. Buck Malone officiating.

In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the First Congregational Church of Belle Fourche.

Helene was born May 7, 1928, in Aberdeen, SD, to Walter and Gertrude (Cook) Weber. She moved with her family to Sioux Falls In 1931, she attended school there and graduated from Washington High School. She attended and graduated from Sioux Falls College in 1950, receiving her degree in education. She moved to Custer and taught school there.

On August 4, 1951, Helene married Wayne Shuck at the First Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. The couple continued to live and teach In Custer until the fall of 1957, when they both moved to Belle Fourche to live, teach, and raise their family. Helene taught mathematics for many years in Belle Fourche and retired in 1978.

Helene loved spending time at the family cabin on False Bottom Creek in the Black Hills. She spent hours sitting on the patio, reading and watching her surroundings. She felt that the cabin was the best place to sleep. She loved to lie in bed on the porch and drift off while listening to the stream flow by.

Helene was a very active member of the First Congregational Church, Belle Fourche, she was a member of Order of Eastern Star and the Quilters Guild. She enjoyed quilting, which she donated to the needy. Helene was an avid reader, she enjoyed assisting the Junior High math class. She was very giving and compassionate to the elderly and housebound members of her church.

Grateful to have shared in Helene's life are her husband; one daughter; one son; one brother; 5 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Helene was preceded in death by her parents and infant son Brian Wayne.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.
