Laura W. Payton, daughter of Y. W. and Sally Ann Payton, was born in Lancaster, Schuyler County, Missouri, May 23, 1858, and departed this life May 30, 1937, at her home in Lancaster, Missouri, being 79 years and 1 week of age at the time of her death.
She was united in marriage to James T. Fugate, May 21, 1882. To this union two children were born, J. C. Fugate of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Mrs. R. F. Leicher of Luverne, Minn. Both of them survive.
Mrs. Fugate was the youngest daughter of a family of nine children, only one of whom is still living. This is John C. Payton of Kirksville, Mo.
Besides her husband and two children she leaves eight grand children and her many friends to mourn her passing. Three grand children, Eleanor Florence and John Ashley Fugate and baby Leicher preceded her in death.
She was a long time member of the Rebekah lodge of Queen City and the Eastern Star and P. E. O. lodges of Novinger. She served as a faithful member in all its branches particularly the Aid Society. After moving to Lancaster she attended the M. E. church as long as her health permitted.
A faithful wife, loving mother and helpful friend, she is deeply mourned by all who knew her.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Queen City, Tuesday at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. P. M. Lind and interment was in the Fugate cemetery near Greentop.
