James was born in New Jersey. Not clear when he came to St. Francois County, Missouri. He took Margaret Maring as his consort to which they had at lest three children: Philip M. {b. circa 1803}, Mahlon Maring {b. Jan. 30, 1804}, and Alfred C. {b. circa 1805}.
