Dean E. Wheelock of Loman Minnesota died April 3, 2005 at the Falls Memorial Hospital.Dean was born on June 3, 1924 in Birchdale, Minnesota and spent his entire life in the Birchdale/Loman area. He graduated from Indus school in 1942. Shortly after graduation Dean served in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in the Philippines from 1942 to 1945.He worked for Mando and then as a heavy equipment operator on the Iron Range. Dean was also a logger in the Birchdale, Loman and Ely areas. He was the last known logger to use Horses and logged from 1949 to 1978. He also worked for the road construction industry for the Koochiching County for more than 22 years and retired in 1989.On October 30, 1948 he was united in marriage to Joyce Leerssen in the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Loman.Dean enjoyed family life and spending time with his grandchildren. He liked to travel, go fishing and hunting and especially watching local sports events particularly the one's his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in.Dean liked to garden and always shared his produce with family, friends, and neighbors. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends, community and church. He loved music and sing-a-longs in the car with family. Dean served faithfully as a church board member for the Building committee. He enjoyed carpentry and making furniture for home, church and all the grandchildren & great-grandchildren. He also loved animals, especially dogs and horses and was very fond of spending quite reflective time reading his Bible. Dean was a member of the Bethany Lutheran church in Loman, Minnesota. The National Rifle Association and the Loman Fire Department.He is preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Ethel (Broeffle) Wheelock. His brother Lester Wheelock and his sister Doris Bullick.Dean is survived by Wife Joyce, his son Dr. Gary (Lynn) Wheelock of Grand Rapids, Mn. Two daughters; LaVonne (Dr. Wayne) Hasbargen of Birchdale Mn. and Sharon Johnson of Pelland Juction, Mn. Brothers George Wheelock of Birchdale and Stanley (Maureen) Wheelock of Midway,GA, and his sister Vivian (John) Grund of Beaverton, OR. Nine grandchildren and Three Great-Grandchildren.Visitation will be held on Friday, April 8th, 2005 from 6-8 pm at the Green-Larsen Memorial Chapel in International Falls.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 10:00 am at the First Lutheran Church in International falls with flag presentation. Pastor Tom Aitken officiating and internment will be in the Loman Cemetery.
