The son of Henry & Magdalena (Kelcapher) Stull, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was federally drafted at the stated age of twenty-two, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg August 28, 1863, as a private with Co. E, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 24, 1865.

He married Matilda Rock and fathered Henry Lincoln (b. 10/11/67) and Sarah Emma (b. 08/27/68 - married David Ulrich). Matilda died in 1895, and he married Dorothy A. Dougal April 3, 1898, acquiring stepson James W. Dougal (b. 10/??/87) and fathering Clara Jane (b. 11/??/99). Cause of James' death is listed as "hypostatic pneumonia" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor. His pension index has his middle initial as "A."
