First born child of Joseph Gray and Hannah Millet. Born in Worcester MA, the family removed to New Hampshire Territories in 1781. He was a shoemaker by trade, which trade he worked at during the winter months, following boating during the summer season. It was in the spring of 1808 that he first came to Coventry, VT. It is related that he came all the way from Westmoreland, NH to Coventry on foot, drawing after him a handsled on which were his shoemaker's tools and personal belongings. He returned the next summer, again on foot, to clear a piece of land and erect a rude log cabin. He returned to Westmoreland to marry Levina Reed, and when he returned to Coventy this time it was as befitted a bridegroom, on horseback. He was the first shoemaker to settle in these parts and did all the work for the four adjoining towns for many years.
