The third of thirteen children of Welcome and Mary Yeaw. For many years Welcome was a comb maker in Leominster, Massachusetts. In November of 1861, at the age of 45, he enlisted from Northborough, MA. into Co. B 32nd MA Reg't as a "musician." He served until June of 1862 when he was seriously injured on the battlefield and ultimately lost the use of one arm, one leg, and the ability to father any children. He moved to Vineland, NJ to live with his sister Lydia Yeaw Ross as he recuperated. In Vineland he married Maria F.White, a widow with two children. Her grave has not been found.
