James Arthur Pelton, 76, of Charleston died at 7 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 8, 1996) at his residence. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with Dr. Mark Prevo officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Masonic Services at 8:15 p.m. He was born July 11, 1919,in ElDorado, Kansas, the son of Charles and LaVerne (Sheeley) Pelton. He was married to Beatrice Roberts Aug. 15, 1940, and she survives. Other survivors include: four sons, Kirk Pelton and Bruce D. Pelton both of Charleston, Jimmy L. Pelton of Oakland, and Everl Robert Pelton of Santa Rose CA; one daughter, Debbie Kay Craig of Charleston; a sister Charline Larrabee of Bellflower, CA; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamelia Jo Parker, a sister Betty Wheeler, a grandson, a great-granddaughter, and a great-grandson. Mr.Pelton was a Fireman and Engineer on the Nickle Plate and Norfolk & Western Railroads with over 36 years of service.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Charleston, a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive, Firemen, and Engineers, the Charleston Masonic Lodge AF/AM No. 35, the Valley of Danville Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Bodies, the Ansar Shrine of Springfield, and The Grotto of McAllen Texas. He was a life member of the Charleston Elks and Eagles Lodges, and a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge.
Mr Pelton organized Boy Scout Troop 53 sponsored by the Charleston Elks Lodge in 1948. He was active in Boy Scouts in the Rio Grande Council of Texas. He was Charleston Township Supervisor from 1959 to 1971 and served 15 years on the Coles County Board with two terms as Chairman. He also was Chairman of the Board of Review for one year. He was a Lincolnland Hospice volunteer for 8 years. Memorials to the First Christian Church for the Youth Programs, or the Boy Scouts of America.
