Allene (Pettus) Lott, 97, died at her home in Goliad on Wednesday, March 18, 2009. She was born Dec. 5, 1911, in Goliad to one of the founding ranch families, William Freeman "Buck" Pettus and Nettie Taylor Pettus.
After completion of her education, she began teaching in San Antonio to the children from poverty. She returned to Goliad and lived with her brother, Bob Pettus, and taught at the small farming community of Riverdale. While there, she married John Freeman Lott on Feb. 22, 1941, and they celebrated 68 years of marriage this year. They began their home in Berclair, farming and ranching for 30 years.
Survivors include a son, Freeman Pettus (Cathy) Lott; and a daughter, Alicia Lott (Gary) Cowley; seven grandchildren, Charline Crabtree, Dr. Lisa Wilkinson, Allison Grabow, Robert Pate, Carolyn Cowley Crane, Amanda Byrd and John Cowley; 10 great-grandchildren; three nieces, Patricia Harnden, Judy Gantt Newton and Virginia Gantt Welder.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; and brothers, Bob Pettus and John Pettus.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Goliad at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, followed by a graveside service at the Lott-Pettus family cemetery at 5:15 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church building fund.
Arrangements were under the direction of Grace Funeral Home, Victoria.
