Madison was a son of Jesse Cornelius and ____ Marsh and a grandson of William and Lettice Cornelius of Blount County, Alabama. He is mentioned in William's will: ...(giving) monies to Jesse Cornelius' three Sons William, James and Mattison Cornelius.....


He married America Gately May 11, 1841 in Blount County, Alabama "with Madison Cornelius and Mathias Little, bondsmen, Jesse Cornelius, father Mathias Little, step-father of A. Gately consent." This marriage is recorded on page 878, Book C, 1838-1844, Blount County, Alabama.


Madison served as a Private in Company C, 48th Alabama Infantry, CSA. In 1991, Marshall County, Alabama, a Confederate Soldier Marker was erected on his grave. He fought at the battles of Sharpsburg and Harpers Ferry. During the Sharpsburg battle, he was wounded in the shoulder by an exploded cannon shell. He filed for a pension June 8, 1887.
