Martin Wesley (Mart) Fanning rode with the Texas Rangers, and here is part of his Texas Rangers service record: STATE OF TEXAS, June 4th, 1875
"I hereby certify that M. W. Fanning a Private of Captain Caldwell, Company F, of the FRONTIER BATTALION, was mustered into the State Service on the 4th day of June 1874, and is this day honorably DISCHARGED. The said M. W. Fanning was last paid by Capt. M.M. Kury to include the 31st day of August 1874, and has pay due him from that time to the present date.
There is due said M. W. Fanning the sum of 365 33/100 dollars. He is indebted to the State of Texas 13. 69/100 dollars, on account of cash advance by Ed Gray for $13.69. 35. 351.74 app to for $351.74/100. Neal Caldwell Captain Commanding Company."

STATE OF TEXAS--November Thirteeth 1876
"I hereby certify, that Mart Fanning Private of Lt. F. M. Moore Company D, of the Frontier Battalion, was mustered into the State Service on the First day of September 1876.
The said Mart Fanning has pay due him from First September to the present date.
There is due said Mart Fanning the sum of One hundred and twenty dollars. Lt. F.M. Moore Commanding Company."

The "History of New Mexico," Pacific States Publishing Company, 1907, states that M. W. Fanning came to New Mexico Territory from Texas in October, 1879, having served for four years as a Texas Ranger in the employ of the Lone Star state. In 1880, with Peter Corn, he located a place in the Seven Rivers country and started to improve property there. They began business together and both figured in the material development and progress of that portion of the Territory. Mr. Fanning engaged in the raising of cattle, sheep and horses near Lakewood, NM. He was one of the oldest of the pioneer settlers of the Pecos Valley. He was well known as an extensive stockman of large and profitable business interests.

Fanning's widow drew a pension until 1922, when she
