CIVIL WAR VETERAN. SERVED WITH CO D 20TH PA CAVALRY . ENLISTED AS PVT JUNE 1863. LEFT SERVICE CAPT JUNE 1865.
The son of Frederick & Mary Magdalena (Swords) Otstot, in 1850, he and his apparent sister, Catherine, were living with the Michael Kauffman family in Fairview Township, York County. In 1860, he was a shoemaker living with the Mohler family in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and had an apparent dalliance with seventeen-year-old Catherine Mohler. He married her January 28, 1861, and fathered William Hugene (b. 01/07/61) and Cora Ann (b. @1867 - married George Hoover). He stood 5' 8" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first served with the 1st Pennsylvania Emergency Militia September 12 - 24, 1862, during the Antietam crisis. He then enlisted in Mechanicsburg June 15, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 23 as sergeant of Co. D, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), a six-month regiment. He re-enlisted with Co. B of the three-year organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry, promoted to 1st lieutenant February 16, 1864, and to captain April 19, 1865, and honorably discharged June 26, 1865.

He was a post-war member of Zinn Post No. 415, G.A.R.
