Mrs. Augusta Copeland, 81, widow of Wallace R. Copeland and a pioneer resident of Walla Walla died suddenly Friday morning at her home, 302 Whitman St.
Mrs. Copeland was born in Vinice, Illinois on 8 Sep 1864 but moved with her family to Salem, Missouri, when she was 12 years old.
On 2 May 1882 the family left for Washington Territory in a covered wagon with a pair of horses to haul the parents and 6 children along with household effects. Their journey took them through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho. Mrs. Copeland in later years often recalled the difficulties of the trip. In Wyoming they kept on the road at night in order to make it to the water holes. The family arrived in Walla Walla 23 Aug. 1882.
Unable to obtain land around Walla Walla, Mrs. Copeland's father homesteaded near Wasco, in Sherman County, Oregon, and later was able to get a preemption and timber culture which gave him additional land.
In 1884, the dughter was married to Wallace R. Copeland. Their 5 children, all living, are Henry of Walla Walla, Mrs. Laura (Ted) Stiles of Portland, mrs. Elizabeth Ennis of Winthrop, Mrs. Ella (Frank L.) Ralston of Walla Walla and Edwin Copeland of Walla Walla
Mrs. Copeland was an active member of the Presbyterian church.
