John Byers Brand, 92, of Homosassa died Wednesday, 18 Nov 2009, in Homosassa. He was born on 8 Oct 1917 in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, the son of the late Thomas Brand and Maude E. Byers Brand.

He graduated from Coraopolis High School, Coraoplis, PA. He obtained the B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1939. His education was put on hold when he served in the 139th Field Artillary, 31st Division during WW II, serving in New Guinea.

He attended Columbia University in 1946 and 1947, taking accounting courses. He attended New York University in 1948, taking advanced accounting courses.

He was for a time an accounting teacher in the City College of New York in New York City. He then obtained employment with Kennecott Copper Corporation in New York City, where from 1951 to 1986, he rose from a position as Consolidation Account to Assistant Manager of Accounting and retired as an Executive Accountant, having worked for Kennecott for 35 years.

He and his wife Martha were members of the First Presbyterian Church in South Amboy, NJ. After moving to Homosassa, from Sayerville, NJ, they became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Crystal River, FL. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Homosassa. John was an avid fisherman.

He was cremated and his remains were returned to his family.

John's wife preceded him in death by a month and a half. He was survived by two daughters, Ellen Keenan of Lincoln, NE and Barbara Anderson and her husband Folke of Glenwood, NJ; three grandchildren, McKenna Keenan and her husband Dennis Smolik, of Lincoln, NE, Meghan Anderson of Woodland Park, NJ and Lindsey Anderson of Bloomfield, NJ; two great-grandchildren, Aaron and Brielle Keenan of Lincoln, NE.
