He was the son of James Monroe and Mary Ella Sikes French. After exceeding 40 years in the automotive industry, he retired from Wannamaker Motor Company. He then was the owner and operator of French's Small Engine. He was an active member of Limestone United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Agnes Godwin French of the home; two sons, Brett (Heather) French of Orangeburg and Harold (Joanie) French of Lexington; two daughters, Joyce (Ricky) Fogle and Sharon (William) Fender, both of Orangeburg; one daughter-in-law, Tammy French of Walterboro; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, LaVelle Langley and Helen Moring, both of Roanoke, AL, and Frances Johnson of McDonough, GA.

He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny French of Walterboro; brothers, Walker and Clifford French of Wedowee, AL, Curtis French of Forsythe, GA, Horace French of Macon, GA, and Pete French of Orangeburg; sisters, Bessie McManus of Cullman, AL, Cassie Wilson of Wedowee, AL, Doris Giles of Roanoke, AL, and Mary Jim Keaton of Atlanta, GA.
