Peter was the fifth of eight children born to Joseph and Philomena Gay. The Gay family lived for a few years after his birth in the town of Superior in Wisconsin. In Superior quite a few of his siblings were born there. Next, the family moved to the small town of Moose Lake. In the 1885 Minnesota State Census, the Gay family is living next door to Peter's future wife Della.

Peter and Della moved around Minnesota throughout their marriage and lived in many different cities. They even stayed for a short time in Washington. Together they had ten children, five boys: Melvin, Clifford, Ervin, Fred and Conrad, and five girls: Blanche, Bessie, Violet, Flora and Irene.

Peter is buried alongside his wife of 53 years, Della.
