Born Nov. 25, 1917 in Milford, a son of Herbert D. and Grace (Eddy) Stem, Jack was a life long borough resident. He attended Blair Academy in Blairstown and graduated from Frenchtown High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Signal Corps and was stationed in the Philippines.
Jack was the president of Stem Brothers, Inc., a fuel company he founded in Milford in 1946.
He was a longtime member of the First United Church of Christ in Milford, a charter member of Oak Hill Golf Club in Holland Township, member of the Milford Lions Club, past president of the Milford Union Cemetery Association and a member of the Orion Lodge, F.&A.M. in Frenchtown, the NJ Fuel Merchants Association and the Hunterdon Fuel Dealers Association.
Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating and traveling. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and many friends.
His beloved wife, Jewell D. Stem, passed away in 2005. His son, David Stem, and his brother, Doug Stem, both died earlier.
He is survived by his daughter Judith Dilts of Pittstown; two sons, H. Craig Stem and Richard D. Stem, both of Holland Township, his sister, Barbara Matthiessen of Osterville, Mass.; 11 grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Bebop", J.D. Stem, Timothy Stem, Jeff Wilson, Bryan Wilson, Matthew Dilts, Brent Dilts, Alison Stem, Michael Stem, Wade Stem, Justin Stem and Hayley Stem; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at the First United Church of Christ, Church Street, Milford.
Interment, with military honors, followed at Milford Union Cemetery. Visitation was Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Holland Township.
