Jake was a hard working farm boy. He was one the best cotton pickers in that area. J. W. and two of his cousins, Odress Wilson and her husband Preston Wilson could pick over four hundred pounds each per day.
Jake left home early and lived with and worked for his uncle Edgar Jackson. He also lived with and worked for a family named York. He moved to Houston some time in the late 1930's. He worked on a dairy owned by the Burchfields. Not much to say about milking cows. Time was 2:30 in the morning and 2:30 in the afternoon, seven days a-week.
Jake went into the Army in Dec. of 1942. He was discharged Dec. 9, 1945.
He saw service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then to the Pacific. He was in Co. F of Combat Engineer Core. Much of his time was spent in Italy rebuilding bridges that had been destroyed during the war. He was not severely wounded.
After the service, he worked for the Texas Pipe Line Co. in Dallas for about 2 years, then moved back to Houston and worked on parking lots until he passed away.
He married Allie McKee sometime in the early 1950's and lived with her until she passed away June 12, 1979.
He married Billie LeBleu Yeathermon Dec. 6 1980. This union lasted until she passed away Nov. 3, 1992. No children from either marriage. (by Morris G. Smith)
