G. B. Smith, deputy mine inspector of Utah, was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, August 8, 1870. He is self-educated and acquired the knowledge which carried him up to his present important position by hard work and extensive reading.

When but 11 years of age he commenced his career as a coal miner and ever since, with little deviation, he has been associated with that industry. From the time he first went to work in a coal mine he has filled every position from trapper to mine superintendent, gaining advancement strictly by merit.

As a coal miner he became familiar with the mines of Nova Scotia, Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico. In Utah he has been identified with the Utah Fuel company, and for a short time with the American Fuel company. In Colorado he was identified with the Colorado Fuel & Iron company and the Royal Fuel company. He first came West in 1895, locating in Wyoming.

As deputy mine inspector Mr. Smith reflects a splendid knowledge of the mining industry, and the practical work which he followed for so many years particularly qualifies him for the position which he so ably fills.

Mr. Smith was married in 1900 to Miss Ellen C. Mower of Fairview, Utah, and two boys and four girls were the fruit of the union. He has been a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows since 1898.
